Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

View PDFIf you have a cancer diagnosis and are interested in learning to meditate, the Department of Psychosocial Resources of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre is offering an 8-week Mindfulness –Based Stress Reduction Program.

Classes are open to cancer patients and their support persons. Participants will learn about the mutual influence of mind and body through practical instruction and experiential learning. Specific skills will be taught and practiced, including:

  • Mindfulness Meditation
  • Gentle Yoga Stretches
  • Breath Awareness & Usage
  • Relaxation
  • Visualization
  • Cognitive Coping

In order for you to receive maximum benefit, you will be encouraged to develop and implement a plan of home- based meditation practice.

Linda E Carlson, PhD, R.Psych


Linda CarlsonDr. Linda E. Carlson earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from McGill University in Montreal. She is a full Professor and the first holder of the Enbridge Research Chair in Psychosocial Oncology, at the Department of Oncology, Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Her work focuses on the areas of Cancer Survivorship, Integrative Oncology and Distress Screening. She is also a registered Clinical Psychologist and counsels patients in the Department of Psychosocial Resources at the TBCC.

Dr. Carlson has been trained as a facilitator of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program by founders Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli, and has been leading groups at the TBCC since 1998. She and Dr. Speca created the Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery program and have conducted numerous scientific studies documenting its benefits, in addition to writing the book Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery, Dr. Carlson’s research has a large component devoted to the evaluation of the MBSR program as well as other complementary therapies for cancer survivors. She has published over 120 scientific papers and regularly presents her research at international conferences.

Michael Speca, PhD

Dr. Michael SpecaDr. Michael Speca is a Clinical Psychologist with the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Calgary. Michael received professional training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction from Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli and co-founded the Tom Baker mindfulness program.  He has received the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology’s award in recognition of clinical excellence. His initial interest in mind-body disciplines was developed as a student of dance at the State University of New York.

Shirley McMillan, RN


shirley_001Shirley is a practicing Registered Nurse with Alberta Health Services, Registered Yoga teacher with the Yoga Association of Alberta and Yoga Alliance; Meditation (Vipassana-Insight) facilitator.

Shirley’s style of teaching allows one to fully relax into one’s own sense of being. Her gentle compassionate approach reflects her respect for individual needs and abilities of each participant.

Shirley has been a student of meditation, mindful yoga and mindfulness for many years.  She has professionally trained with Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli.  Shirley has studied with many internationally recognized teachers in the Buddhist and Yoga tradition, and somatic educators. She has training in Concept-Therapy and Continuum Movement.

Shirley continually finds Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction tools to be personally transformative in working with stress in her daily life to settle the thoughts, find steadiness, resilience, and flexibility even in the midst of life’s continual ups and downs.  Shirley believes developing a healthy response to stress is one of life’s most treasured skills.
